Lighting Up Paths a Little Brighter in Rural Sri Lanka
In the quiet rural villages of Aralaganawila in the Polonnaruwa District, something as simple as light can make a life-changing difference. For families living in the “Yaya 7” and “Yaya 8” communities, nights have long brought uncertainty and fear. With the constant risk of elephant encounters and limited infrastructure, moving safely after sunset has been a daily challenge. Even routine activities—walking home, visiting neighbors, or completing evening tasks—have often come with risk.
Today, those pathways are no longer left in darkness. Through the generous support of sponsors Sumudu Atapattu, Neela Abeysinghe, and Shamali Vidyalankara, five solar-powered lights have been successfully installed across these villages. More than just a source of illumination, these lights represent safety, reassurance, and the ability for communities to carry on with their lives more freely after dusk.
This meaningful initiative was made possible not only through sponsorship, but also through the dedication of onsite volunteers and the villagers themselves, who worked together to bring light to their own streets. Their collective effort has transformed once-shadowed paths into safer, more welcoming spaces—proving that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.
As each light shines across these rural roads, it tells a story of community, resilience, and hope. And with continued support, many more villages can experience the same transformation—one light, one step, and one community at a time.
