Restoring Safe Water, Restoring Opportunity
In the rural community of Polpithigama, within the Mahawa Educational Zone, Kalugalla Kanishta Vidyalaya serves as a place of learning, growth, and hope for nearly 300 students. Yet, for some time, a basic necessity—clean drinking water—had become a serious challenge. Due to high levels of minerals and heavy metals in the surrounding soil, the school’s water filtration system required urgent repair, leaving students without reliable access to safe water.
Understanding the urgency of the situation, our community came together to make a difference. With the generous support of our monthly donors and the dedicated efforts of the onsite volunteer team, Hard Truths Society, led by Harshana Lakmal Samaraweera, the school’s RO water filter has now been successfully repaired. What may seem like a simple fix has brought about a meaningful transformation for the entire school.
Today, students once again have access to clean, safe drinking water—supporting not only their health but also their ability to focus, attend school regularly, and thrive academically. Safe water is more than a necessity; it is a foundation for opportunity, dignity, and a better future.
This milestone is a reminder that when communities come together, even the most pressing challenges can be overcome. And with continued support, we can ensure that every child, no matter where they are, has access to something as fundamental as clean water—because every child deserves the chance to learn and grow in a safe environment.
